Alan Moore and Frank Miller comics from those days are the only ones that really hold up for me now
A lot of the time all those dudes did was just move the thought bubbles into narrative captions though, surely?
though moving them into narrative captions does kind of get around the problem of the thoughts being temporally situated within the main flow of the images (as illustrated above) block caption content can be happening after the action, or before or whatever. At least there’s a little leeway.
Also: The time it’s taking the Atom to think those thoughts in the above pic is not the only unrealistic part of the whole scenario - involving as it does a preternaturally tiny yet super strong crime fighting man in an all in one lycra body suit - so I try not to be pedantic about this kind of thing.
